High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with  HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
Enrichment classes: Enrichment classes run across years 3 to 6. These provide opportunities for students to engage in complex tasks which go beyond the standard grade curriculum. Activities might include advanced problem solving, critical thinking exercises, and creative projects. Explicit teaching remains at the core of these classes, with teachers focused on identifying gaps in student learning by making their instructional strategies clear, direct, and transparent.
Across our school

Competitions and Challenges: Students have the opportunity to participate in numerous competitions throughout the year. From grade 2, students may participate in ICAS tests. All students may elect to take part, regardless of whether they have been identified as HPGE. Students within the enrichment classes are provided with the opportunity to participated in APSMO’s Mathematics Olympiad, and the Australian Mathematics Trust’s Australian Mathematics Competition, BEBRAS challenge, and Computational and Algorithmic Thinking tests.

Leadership Development Program: Opportunities for students to take on leadership roles within the school or community, developing skills in collaboration, decision-making, and ethical reasoning.

At MFPS students are provided with numerous opportunities to become involved as leaders within the school setting, including student representation (i.e school captain, SRC member), school representation (i.e. school ambassador), sport and house leadership and peer support. Children in Stage 3 self-nominate to complete our Leadership program, led by our dedicated Leadership Committee. The program focuses on the skills and responsibilities of being a student leader. At the successful completion of the Leadership Development Program students may choose to run for school leadership positions.

The school also set up a Junior AECG in 2024 in consultation with AECG, to ensure equal representation of student voice across our school. These children also complete the Leadership Development Program and have a valuable role in representing Aboriginal students and community perspectives. Our MFPS Junior AECG is now linking up with the Community of Schools Junior AECG.

The Leadership Development Program was introduced many years ago at MFPS and has been continually fine-tuned to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the student cohort.

Macquarie Fields Got Talent (K-6): “Macquarie Fields Got Talent” provides a platform for students to showcase and celebrate their unique gifts, nurturing those who demonstrate exceptional creativity, originality, and innovative thinking. By encouraging students to design and present performances in areas such as music, dance, drama, and comedy, the talent quest fosters creative expression and imagination. It also promotes problem-solving, as students plan, rehearse, and refine their acts, often finding inventive ways to overcome challenges. Most importantly, these opportunities allow students to generate and share original ideas across a variety of disciplines, building confidence and inspiring others within the school community.

Gala Days: Gala Days provide a valuable opportunity for students to showcase their talents and skills in a variety of sports, in a supportive environment. These events enable teachers to identify students’ strengths and areas of potential, allowing them to tailor learning experiences that hone and extend each student’s abilities. Through Gala Days, we celebrate achievement and encourage ongoing growth and development for every learner.

Specialist Programs: Programs such as AFL and Soccer, delivered by qualified external coaches, create further opportunities for students to be extended. These coaches can identify students who demonstrate outstanding potential and provide them with guidance and encouragement to continue developing their skills through formal sporting pathways.

Across NSW

The Boys Vocal Workshop: The Boys Vocal Workshop encourages boys to explore their singing voices in a supportive and inspiring environment. By focusing on performance skills, vocal development, and teamwork, this workshop helps break down stereotypes, empowers boys to participate fully in the arts, and nurtures a positive attitude towards music.

Schools Spectacular: Participation in the Schools Spectacular provides students with an authentic, large-scale performance experience that extends their skills beyond the school setting. It allows them to work with professional artists and peers from across the state, showcasing their talents on a grand stage and fostering pride, resilience, and artistic excellence.

PSSA Sporting Pathways: Watch the videos below to see how the PSSA Pathways move through school, to zone and further.

Premier's Sporting Challenge: A multi-faceted program including the 10 week Challenge, Race around Australia, sport leadership programs, ambassador program, teaching resources, professional learning and access to funding grants.
